To help inspire and motivate others into living a healthy and active lifestyle. As a fitness professional I think it’s so important to practice what you preach and to help others understand that changing your lifestyle is not something that will happen overnight. It’s all about creating healthy habits, not restrictions! I’m all for BALANCE. Work hard towards your goals, enjoy time socialising with friends and family, make time for yourself, practice positive thinking and enjoy life with a happy heart!

Who is your biggest career influence?

When I first started losing weight, I came across photos of women with the sort of bodies I aspired to have. What I later found out, is not only were these women rocking amazing, toned and fit bodies, they were also embracing confident, healthy and goal-driven lifestyles – the kind of lifestyle I wanted for myself! I instantly fell in love with the industry and have since met a lot of amazing and hard-working people including IFBB pros and many of the Oxygen cover-girls. These women have influenced me to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry and I now find the people close to me are also like-minded inpiduals, living healthy and active lifestyles. I love the fact that I am surrounded by such positive and supportive people, who are always encouraging me to do better, work harder and believe in myself.

What are 2 training tips you would give to aspiring athletes?

Have a goal. Work hard. Make it happen.

Always set goals... whether it’s short term, long term or in the very distant future, it’s so important to have something to work towards. Also, never attempt anything in life with only half the attention/effort it requires! If you truly want to achieve something, then you will always find a way to accomplish it. So many times I hear people say they 100% want to achieve something, yet they are lucky to give even 50%. Be consistent and patient with your efforts, and BELIEVE you can do it… if it’s worth having, then it won’t come easily, and if you fall off the wagon, then get straight back on it!

“We all have great inner power. The power is self-faith. There’s really an attitude to winning. You have to see yourself winning before you win. And you have to be hungry. You have to want to conquer.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger

Listen to your body! – I’m all for working hard and giving 110% effort into your training sessions, BUT it is absolutely vital that you are listening to your body and acknowledging when you need to stop and take a break. Just like proper nutrition, supplementation and training is essential to your program, an adequate amount of rest is too!  You will not only come back next time feeling refreshed and re-energised, but you will also have given time for your muscles to heal and recover, making them stronger.

When you’re overtraining, your cortisol (stress) levels increase... NOT good! This stops muscle growth, protein synthesis and also stops your body from burning fat. Be aware of the warning signs: muscle soreness, insomnia, loss of motivation and appetite, increased frequency of colds, mood swings, injuries, etc.  Make sure you are following a balanced diet and training plan that allows for rest days, as well as using the correct supplements everyday (including those immediately after training), and lastly, take the time to rest and recover – sleep, get a massage and practice yoga and meditation!

Tell everyone something they don’t know about you.

A few years ago I lived a completely different lifestyle… I was 17kgs heavier, depressed and stressed that I did not have any drive or goals for the future. To say that I have changed the way I live, think and do, has become one of my greatest ever achievements. When I first embarked on my weight loss journey, I found researching to be one of the most rewarding things I could do – with the internet at my fingertips, I literally had the power to find all the information I needed to help me change my life, body and mind.

When I met Alicia-Marie and Lindy Olsen at the 2011 Fitness Expo, standing in front of them, chubby-faced with a fearful yet hopeful expression on my face, I told them my ultimate goal of wanting to compete and be on the cover of an Oxygen magazine! There I stood, half expecting the response, “oh that’s a nice goal, good-luck honey”… I instead received a signed poster that said I “will be the next oxygen cover girl”. Best motivational poster ever!... and yes, this still hangs on my wall 5 years later haha!

What are you hobbies outside of training & competing?

I absolutely love exploring and doing anything active – running, travelling, boxing, bush walks, even ‘attempting’ to surf. I’ve also found a greater appreciation and love for the more simple things: watching sunrises/sunsets, picnics, cooking, reading, spending time down at the beach and socialising with friends and family.  I also enjoy doing my own research into health and fitness – I find the ever changing science behind body building and nutrition to be really interesting.
