Callum Millward places 2nd at the Tauranga Half Ironman race

Dec 2010

Callum Millward is one of our sponsored athletes and has written a race report on his efforts at the Tauranga Half Ironman.

"Recently I made the transition from ITU Olympic distance racing to Half Ironman and non-drafting races. The biggest change from a 2hr drafting World Cup to a 4hr Half Ironman event is the need to fuel the body so you are able to maintain an intensity to get through without blowing up. My target race for the NZ season was the recent Tauranga Half. This was my second Half that I’ve raced so I was still unsure as to how it would go, I just knew it was shaping up to be a fast day with one of the strongest fields assembling in recent years.
Overall I had a good day and finished up 2nd 10s behind the winner. I also managed to have the fastest run split of 1:13-in part because I had fuelled up with Balance Restore throughout the 90km cycle-and also in part because I came off the bike with Cameron Brown and I was running scared knowing the pedigree of runner he is.

In a hot race like Tauranga, if you are under fuelled it generally comes back to haunt you around the 15km mark on the run. It’s about this point that you begin to prey to the triathlon Gods for mercy. Fortunately with the combination of Balance Restore and Squeezy’s I had on the bike, the run becomes a more straight forward affair of being able to run rather than having the cravings for lollies or deep fried food.

So for me the planning for 2011 begins where I will be heading to the USA for the 70.3 Half Ironman series. I will have my Balance products stashed in my bike bag as I continue the transition into the longer events and ultimately Hawaii Ironman in a few years.

Cheers
Callum"
